The Democratic National Committee kicked up a firestorm of condemnation on Tuesday over a snarky press release roasting former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s (R) exit from the 2024 GOP primary.
“This news comes as a shock to those of us who could’ve sworn he had already dropped out,” said DNC spokesperson Sarafina Chitika in a statement reacting to Hutchinson suspending his campaign after the Iowa caucus.
At a time when President Joe Biden is sounding the alarm over former President Donald Trump’s increasingly autocratic and menacing rhetoric, many pundits and politicians – on both the left and right – found the DNC’s message to be off target. Hutchinson, a former U.S. attorney, was one of the few GOP candidates who regularly called out Trump for his attacks on the legal system and publicly vowed not to support the former president if convicted.
“I am deeply disappointed by this statement from the @DNC. While Gov Hutchinson is a conservative and holds many views with which I disagree, I have admired the way he has courageously spoken out against Donald Trump and the danger he presents,” wrote Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) in response to the statement.

. Former CNN political reporter John Harwood added, “juvenile, idiotic, counter-productive statement … the kind of thing you’d expect from Trump’s team, not Biden’s.”
“To be clear, this isn’t JUST puerile. Who could say RNC/Trump hasn’t waded in those waters? It’s that it’s SO anathema to Biden’s message. Which is that democracy is worth saving, and a person like Asa, who agrees, should be praised, not mocked,” replied columnist and commentator S.E. Cupp.
